In the same month we celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Delta Sigma Theta sorors observe Sisterhood Month. As the world around us starts to transition from the cold winter months to the warmer spring, we can take this time to reflect on the warmth we receive from the love and sisterhood we share.
Ways to Celebrate Sisterhood Month
Whether you have your sisterhood month mapped out already or you're not sure where to start, here are some ideas for incorporating sisterly love into your month.
- Call or text a sorority sister. Let her know you're thinking of her and love her.
- Invite a sorority sister out. You can invite a fellow sister to a workout class, a chapter meeting, a worship service, or a class to learn a new skill.
- Reflect on what it means to be a sorority sister. Review your oath and what the sorority means to you.
- Perform service. Service is a great way to show sisterhood.
- Give gratitude. Thank a national, regional, or local officer or committee member for their leadership and service.
- Forgive. Reach out to a sister you have a broken relationship with and see if you can mend it.
- Show off your sorority pride. Wear some DST apparel that shows off your style while repping your sorority.
- Support a worthy cause. Find a charity or other cause that speaks to you and find a way to support it.
- Share your memories. Reflect on some of your favorite moments with your sorority, and share them with someone.
Ways to be a Better Sister
None of us is perfect, and we can each work harder to be better sisters. This month is a great chance to reflect on ways you can improve yourself and your relationship with sorors. Here are a few things you might consider implementing to improve your relationships.
- Celebrate with your sisters.Good news loves company, too. Showing up and being genuinely happy for a soror’s successes can be a meaningful way to show her love.. Whether it's a new job, a new house, a new love, a good grade, or even a new goal that was met, showing up to celebrate with your soror is a priceless gift that she will always cherish.
- Be present. We have a never-ending supply of distractions around us at all times. Taking the time to be truly engaged with a soror when you are with her is invaluable. Undivided attention when speaking with someone is a gift, and learning how to be a great listener is a worthwhile life skill. Practice listening (instead of quickly interjecting your own thoughts). Your sister will feel heard and appreciated, and you will connect with your sister more deeply..
- Be a woman of your word. If you tell someone you will be somewhere, be there. If you tell someone you will do something, do it. Be the sister your soror can rely on.
- Don't give up on your sister. Just as you are not perfect, your sorors aren't, either. Recognize that they have shortcomings, too, but work to love them regardless. No one should condone abusive behavior, but forgiving your sister for moments of being human is a great form of love.
- See her side. Recognize that your viewpoint is not the only one out there. Being open to learning about different perspectives can help you become more empathetic towards your sisters.Be willing to find a way to say, “You may be right!”
- Support her. When your soror is experiencing a trial, be there for her. Be observant to find a way to serve her. In times of grief, sickness, heartache, pain, confusion, or despair, a loving sister can make a world of difference, even if it is just as a shoulder to cry on or a listening ear.
What Sisterhood Means
Sisterhood is one of the founding principles of our sorority. Being a sister means forgiveness, companionship, standing by each other when no one else will, having a lifelong friend who will have your back, having someone to turn to in good times and bad, having someone who will laugh with you or cry with you, and never having to be alone. Sisterhood means love.
Go be the best sister you can be, this month and always. Sisterhood is forever.
