We are taught throughout grade school we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but if we're honest, it's pretty hard to avoid. When you are working to leave a strong first impression during sorority recruitment, you'll want to ensure your outfits are on point. The first impression you leave on the sorority members will be a lasting one. We are here to help you know what to wear to make sure that impression is a positive one.
A Sample Ensemble
If someone from your sorority reaches out with a dress code, stick to it. The panel will be able to see how well you are following directions.
At the rush meeting, you will want to leave the best impression on everyone. Keep your outfit simple and clean. You will want to go with something along the lines of business casual or your Sunday best. An example of a great rush outfit would be:
- A black blazer
- A white button-down shirt
- A black pencil skirt
- A pair of low heels
- Stockings
If you don't have these items in your closet, it's a great idea to invest in some. This outfit will become a staple that you can add to your rotation for job interviews or other professional appointments.
What Not to Wear
Picking the perfect outfit can sometimes be easier when you know what you're trying to avoid. Steer clear of the following:
- Distracting clothing. This could be anything too showy or too bright.
- Delta Sigma Theta sorority paraphernalia. Sporting DST apparel before officially joining the sorority is inappropriate. Once you’re in, however, there’s a whole world of stylish Delta Sigma Theta para to stock up on.
- Casual attire. You want to give the impression that this meeting and opportunity mean a lot to you. Looking your best shows that you care and you are taking this seriously. Looking like you couldn't take the time to get dressed up sends the wrong message.
- Over-the-top clothing. While you want to wear nice clothing, it's not a formal event. Your ball gown will have to wait. Overdressing sends the message that you don't know what is appropriate and what isn't.
Tips for Success
If you're still not sure what to wear, here are a few extra tips to make sure your outfit is just right for rush.
- Don't skimp on the stockings. If you are admitted into Delta Sigma Theta, you will have many opportunities to wear stockings. Stockings that match your skin color will need to be on a regular rotation in your closet.
- Find the right fit. Clothes that fit right will make or break an outfit. If it's within your budget, get clothing professionally tailored to fit your body. If not, take care to buy clothing that will complement your body (not too big, not too tight).
- Watch the heel. A small heel is fine, but if you're teetering around on stilettos, you might end up focusing on balance more than anything else that evening.
- Hair and makeup. Your makeup should be simple, too. A neutral lip with light makeup in soft colors will be your best bet. Opt for a hairstyle that complements your face shape.
- Keep accessories simple. If you choose to add accessories, keep those simple and neutral as well. Any over-the-top pieces will draw attention to you, but for the wrong reasons.
- Smile. From the words of little orphan Annie, "You're never fully dressed without a smile." Your outfit could be just right, but if your facial expressions give the message you can't wait to leave, that will be held against you. Compartmentalize anything else going on in your life and put on your best face for the evening.
- Don't stress. Remember to look your best, but also don't stress. If you are feeling nervous or panicky, a few breathing exercises can help bring your heart rate back down.
The rush meeting will help you learn all about Delta Sigma Theta and figure out if it is a good fit for you. It also gives sorority members the opportunity to see if you’re a good fit for the chapter.
If you are chosen to join the ranks of DST, you will be representing the chapter and the sorority any time you are engaged in sorority events or wearing any Delta Sigma Theta para. Those choosing rushees will take into consideration how they want Delta represented. You’ve got what it takes inside…you just need to make sure it shows through on the outside. A little extra care in how you present yourself will help you shine during recruitment.
