Between Covid-19, common colds, influenza, and RSV, respiratory illnesses are surging through the country yet again. While we are not living in mask mandate times like before, you may still choose to wear a mask to try to avoid catching or spreading germs. You can still look good while you're doing it.
We've all had plenty of practice wearing masks, but here are some tips to help you look your best the next time you mask up before you head out.
- Eyeshadow. With just your eyes showing on your face, a striking eyeshadow will make a big statement. Break out your colorful or glittery shadows, or finally take the time to learn how to do a smokey eye.
- Eyeliner. Don't skip the frames to your eyes. Eyeliner will give your eyes the boldness that eyeshadow alone can't achieve. You can do a simple line or play around with thickness and wings.
- Eyelashes. If you've ever wanted an excuse to invest in some quality mascara or get lash extensions, masking is a great one. Longer lashes will give you feminine elegance.
- Eyebrows. Eyebrows that are filled and groomed will accentuate your eyes, complement your face shape, and add expression as you talk.
- Concealer. When wearing a mask, only a fraction of your skin is showing. While a mask is the ultimate concealer of any blemishes underneath it, concealer can help you address the blemishes that are showing.
- Hair. Since so much of your face is hidden, your hair will make a bigger impact on your overall appearance than before. You will want to make sure your hair is well-kept. Now might be a fun time to add a fun color to your locks, try out some new braids, or play around with some new 'dos.
- Pick a nice mask. Coordinating your mask with your outfit might feel like a superfluous thing to do in the morning when you get dressed, but the result will be a look that is cohesive and put together. Even if you choose to wear a medical grade or KN-95 mask, you can dress it up with fun colors and patterns. When picking a color for your mask, choose one that complements your skin. A white mask might pick up foundation or blush, so maybe steer clear of white or pale masks.
- Still smile. You might think you're in the clear and your smile can take a break while you're wearing a mask, but don't be so sure. Big smiles reach all the way up to your eyes. You won't fool anyone into thinking you're happy if your eyes are glaring or scowling.
- Don't forget to brush. No one else might be able to smell your breath because of the mask, but do yourself a favor and brush.
- Let your clothes show your style. At LNO Greek, we love it when everyone embraces their own personal style. When you put on a mask, it's easy to feel like you don't need to put in any effort because you feel unrecognizable. But letting your style shine through, whether through a Delta Sigma Theta satin jacket or an oversized sweater, will help you feel beautiful because you are being true to yourself.
- Accessorize. If you plan on taking your mask on and off multiple times throughout the day, think twice about the big earrings. You can still dress up your look with necklaces, chokers, stud earrings, bracelets, or rings.
If you are nervous about this season of sickness, masking can offer an important barrier, and so can these steps (according to the CDC):
- Wash your hands. Scrub those fingers and hands for 20 seconds (at least) with soap and water.
- Stay away. If you know someone is sick, stay away from them. If you are sick, stay away from other people. The fewer people that contact a sick person, the less the germs will spread.
- Avoid touching your face. If you have touched something contaminated and then touch your mouth, eyes, or nose, those germs will enter your system and most likely get you sick, too.
- Clean high-traffic surfaces. Don't let germs stick around. If there's a handle or door knob that gets frequented by many different hands, clean it.
- Practice healthy habits. Get enough sleep. Drink lots of water. Eat your veggies. Exercise. Taking care of your body will help you have the strength to fight off germs when they come your way.
Stay warm and stay healthy this winter.
