Celebrating Crossing the Burning Sands: Line Anniversary Ideas

Your life changed for the better when you crossed the burning sands. To commemorate the day you and your line sisters officially joined your sorority together, you have a lot of options.

Here are some ideas that can fit the budget of any line wanting to celebrate the beginning of their sisterhood.

Compile a Time Capsule

As a group, assemble a time capsule to show members of your sorority 100 years from now what it was like to be a member of your sorority today. You can include some fun facts about 2024 life, such as:

  • The price of gas
  • The price of a gallon of milk or a typical grocery trip
  • The current movies in theaters
  • A firsthand account of what happened during COVID years
  • Top news headlines

This is for future sorors, so you’ll also want to include nods to your sorority, including:

  • DST paraphernalia
  • A note on your stationary about why you joined the sorority and what you love about it
  • A roster of everyone in your line
  • A group photo of your line in your best DST apparel
  • A pin from a recent convention
  • Advice to new sorors 100 years after you

Hold a Photo Shoot

Hire a professional photographer and glam up! Take some fun group shots and individual pictures.

Afterward, go out to dinner as a group. You don’t want to waste looking that good just eating at home!

Vacay All the Way

Encourage everyone in the group to save up so you can take a group vacation together. Whether you’re a bunch of city girls drawn to a Broadway experience or beach lovers who dream of the Caribbean, find something that works for everyone. Since this is a more expensive one, be sure to start planning far enough in advance for everyone to be able to budget for it.

Start a Memory Journal

Grab a journal and make an entry about one of your favorite memories with your line. Sign it and pass it along. Let everyone have a chance to fill in a moment they enjoyed together.

Alternatively, let everyone submit a memory digitally. Compile all the submissions into printed copies for everyone to enjoy.

Don’t forget to add photos!

Plant a Tree

Give back to the community and the environment at the same time. Get permission from the city to plant a tree in a public space. As you watch the tree grow over the years, you can think back on the growth your line has gone through on an individual level and as a group over that same period of time.

Brunch

Get all dolled up and go out for a fancy brunch. Need we say more?

Paint and Sip

A night with the girls, some drinks, and some paint can make for some fun memories. Grab some canvases, paintbrushes, acrylics, and good drinks for an evening of fun flexing (or developing) your creative muscles. You can all choose to paint the same object or landscape or even hire someone to lead the group through the painting experience.

Another fun trend right now is to draw names and paint a portrait of someone in the group. Then, at the end of the evening, you reveal and give their portrait to them. (No previous painting experience is required.)

Attend an Event Together

Pick an activity or event you can all do together. Some ideas might include:

  • A concert
  • A sporting event
  • A theatrical performance
  • A comedian
  • A movie

Find something that resonates with many of the group members and show up and enjoy the evening together. Don’t forget to alternate who chooses each year so everyone can have an opportunity to pick an activity they love.

Spa Treatments

Everyone loves a little pampering. Go together to get a spa treatment. Whether you all get facials, get matching sorority manicures, or opt for massages, you’ll leave the experience feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

Embrace Your Inner Child

When was the last time you went bowling or played mini golf? Find a local spot to relieve the good old days before complex skincare routines and mortgages. The friendly competition will surely lead to laughs and more fun memories to share. Don’t forget to wear your matching DST shirts.

The Real Celebration

No matter what you decide, spending time together will be the best part of it all. These women have become genuine sisters to you since you all started your sorority journey. Celebrate the relationships you otherwise would not have built, the camaraderie you have grown to appreciate, and the sisters you can’t imagine life without.
