Joining one of the Divine Nine sororities is not just a four-year gig like some other Greek organizations. Divine Nine sorority members make a lifelong commitment to the organization.
Before you make such a large commitment, you will want to make sure you are making an informed decision. There are things you should be warned of and understand before you pledge.
Joining a sorority may cause your heart to grow.
Divine Nine sororities love service. A quick internet search of “Delta Sigma Theta service” will populate your screen with pictures of women adorned in Delta Sigma Theta shirts building houses, conducting food drives, caring for the elderly, and more. Sororities have many community involvement projects that allow sorors to give back. It’s hard not to love those whom you serve.
Joining a sorority may result in increased job opportunities, internships, or mentors.
Joining a Greek organization is a known way to network, but people often think of it in terms of those you interact with on a regular basis during your collegiate years. These relationships will be a great source of networking, but it isn’t where the networking stops.
The instant camaraderie and connection that sorors have, even when they belong to different chapters or joined at different times, is undeniable. You will be able to continue using your sorority as a tool for networking for the rest of your life. This can become advantageous as you enter the workforce, seek internships, look for mentors, need letters of recommendation, and more. Sorority sisters love to see their fellow sorors succeed.
Joining a sorority may bolster your resume.
Having a sorority on your resume could help set you apart from the competition, especially if that sorority is associated with rigorous academic standards. What you accomplish during your collegiate sorority days will also help your resume shine.
Sorors spend a lot of time learning skills and participating in philanthropic activities that are very attractive to potential employers. Planning and executing large-scale events or activities, spending hours engaging in service, and serving in leadership positions will all catch the eye of hiring managers.
Joining a sorority may cause success.
An overwhelmingly high percentage of Fortune 500 executives have a sorority or fraternity on their resume. The social skills, leadership qualities, and growth opportunities that are cultivated within a sorority are unmatched.
Sororities have extensive community outreach programs as well as social gatherings, and those all need to be planned, organized, and executed by someone. And that someone is a member of the sorority who is gaining great experience and learning a whole lot along the way.
Joining a sorority may cause fun.
While sorority life comes with a lot of responsibilities and work, it also offers plenty of opportunities to kick back, laugh, and enjoy life to the fullest. Events and conventions will help add fun and variety to your schedule.
Joining a sorority may cause your time management skills to improve.
As a soror, especially at the collegiate level, you are going to have a lot on your plate. Juggling engagements and meetings, volunteering, socializing, doing homework, and attending classes, all while trying to live up to the academic standards of the sorority, will stretch you. Being smart and deliberate about how you spend your time will help you survive, but it will also teach you an incredible skill you’ll use for the rest of your life.
Joining a sorority may cause lifelong friendships.
Joining a group of women will always have its challenges. You may not get along with every soror all the time, but your shared values and your commitment to service can transcend the small stuff. There’s a sense of unity that comes when you roll up your sleeves and serve together for a common goal. You will have friends outside of your sorority, but your sorority sisters will hold a special place in your heart.
Joining a sorority may cause joy.
Joining a sorority means a lot of different things to different women, but for many of us, our sorority membership brings us joy. Giving back to the community is fulfilling, humbling, and gratifying. Getting to know fellow sorors is entertaining and enjoyable. Connecting with someone you just met because you share the Delta bond is a special experience. Being counted among and surrounded by a community of strong, smart, driven, and talented women is an honor and a joy.
I am grateful for the friendships I’ve made, the service opportunities I’ve had, the lessons I’ve learned, and the joy I’ve felt as a result of my Delta Sigma Theta membership. It empowered me to launch my Delta Sigma Theta apparel shop that allows my sisters to rep their unique styles and preferences even as we come together in loyalty to our sisterhood.
