What does it mean to be a sister? What does it mean to have a brother? Outside of a traditional familial setting, what does sisterhood and brotherhood really mean. We asked our readers what sisterhood and brotherhood mean to them. Keep reading to see what they had to say.
An Unbreakable Bond
Sisterhood or brotherhood is the same thing, just in opposite genders. As I'm a woman I have a sisterhood, and for me, those are my friends who became more than sisters.
Having friends is a normal thing, having a sisterhood is another. In my opinion, this is a bond that nowadays is very difficult to find. We trust each other, we tell each other everything, we do things together, easy or hard, and we are always side by side.
This relationship is more than just a bond, it is more than a relationship, it's something that can be hard to explain because we feel it.
I love all of my friends, but I can [sacrifice for] someone who is in my sisterhood, someone I know could do the same thing for me.
Sisterhood for me is a bond that can never break or get lost. We are more than family, we are more than friends, and we are together for everything. We are sisters by heart and not by blood. It is the family we can choose.
People Who Show Up and Vice Versa
Brotherhood and sisterhood for me means having people that you can lean into. These people have a great impact on your life and you share your lives with them. When you have a problem, they are the first people to come to your aid and this also goes both ways. When they need you, you also show up for them. It is like having real brothers and sisters, and that is what this means to belong to a brotherhood or a sisterhood.

A Bond that Lasts Forever
With chapters all over the country, this is a bond that women have forever. Coming from all walks of life, no one will ever feel alone. It connects women from all over the country so they already have a sense of unity from day one. As women get older, they can always turn to their sisters for guidance and support, or just a friendly hello.
Following the Golden Rule
To me, sisterhood or brotherhood is learning to treat total strangers as part of our family instead of viewing them as our competitors in this journey of life. It's to understand that beneath the skin, we all are humans regardless of our skin color, age, gender, or even religion. In addition, it means treating our neighbors as we would want to be treated by them.
Provide a Sense of Community and Belonging
Sisterhood and brotherhood can mean different things to different people, but there are some common themes. For many, it is about having a close bond with others who share similar experiences. This can include things like being part of the same family, growing up in the same neighborhood, or attending the same school. It can also be about having shared values or beliefs.
For example, members of sisterhoods and brotherhoods often support each other through thick and thin. They may also work together to achieve common goals. In short, sisterhood and brotherhood can provide a sense of community and belonging that is essential for a happy and fulfilling life.
Consider Others as Equals
Brotherhood for me is an amiable feeling of kinship and affection. Though it is very hard to put the feeling of brotherhood into words, I would like to try saying that it is a social bond transcending religion, caste, creed, color, and regionality. Brotherhood is what rolls the wheels of society in an even manner.
Without this much-needed feeling of brotherhood, there would be resentment and narcissism sprawling all over the world. (Not that we are living in a modern version of Eden presently.) Brotherhood makes the world a better place by considering the fellow person equal to a brother and worth caring for.

They Symbolize Acceptance and Love
Sisterhood and brotherhood are a fellowship about loyalty, unity, and friendship that can last a lifetime. Whatever happens to you, whether you fail or succeed in life, there is always someone who’s got your back, always supports you, and is proud. It symbolizes love and acceptance. Whatever you are or whoever you will be, you will be accepted wholeheartedly.
A Soul Bond and Emotional Union
For me, sisterhood or brotherhood is a “soul bond” to share and sacrifice with others whatever one owes. It's a union by the emotion of soul and heart, regardless of color, blood, creed, or religion. Sisterhood or brotherhood is so pure and real that few words are often needed to define it. When you are in it; there is no distinction, no pride, and no reason.
